- and learnt it was to mark the first day of spring, or the spring equinox.
Google does this often – present its logo in fun forms to mark different occasions. Earlier ones this year included:
Alexander Graham Bell's Birthday - March 3, 2008

and Leap Year - February 29, 2008

Older ones can be found here

I loved the equinoctal picture, too. I must share this with you- yesterday evening, the nearly full moon rose in a nearly clear sky. the direction of the wind had changed with the evening - as if to mark a date - and it was so uplifitng! Every change of season is a minor miracle.
In a short while after the moonrise, though, there was a whopper of an electrical storm, full of special efects including a smattering of hail.Cant take anything for granted!
Oh Gardenia, so well expressed.
Well, Chennai is experiencing unseasonal rains, and the city is cooler for that - but I fear the mango blossoms will fall off, and there will be no mangoes on our trees.
